Geocache Description:

An easy park and grab.  Park on opposite side of road rather than on the corner.

Private Ramsay left England in the 1850's' probably not thinking he would never see home again. A member of Her Majesty's 40th Regiment of Foot he was fatally wounded in the lead up to the battle to capture Te Arei or Pukerangiora Pa. On a reconnaissance by the Regiment they were ambushed when they ventured into a bush track. Ramsay was captured and died of his wounds and he was buried by the Maoris at this site probably around 1861-62. Many years later this Holly tree was planted  and plans were made to erect a memorial plaque here on this site. A local historian Mr. Ted Andrews apparently drew up a suitable plaque and engaged a local resident, Mr Rodney Osborne to erect it at the Huirangi School Centennial in 1972. The plaque was not ready at the time of the Centennial and Mr Osborne died very suddenly soon after and  the plaque was never erected. A member of the Osborne family has vague recollections of the plaque arriving and the words on the bottom of it reading "Forever a piece of England" or words to that effect.

You do not need to enter the paddock or climb the fence. The cache is a camouflaged container with plenty of room for swappable or traveling items.
