You will need to walk to ground zero from the designated parking area. The direct route requires scaling a rather steep incline, but if I can make it down and back, it is totally do-able. The indirect route requires walking around the pine trees toward the Bavarian Inn, but is not as steep (still a good hill though) and backtracking toward the wooden bridge, then crossing the water coming out of the culvert and climbing up alongside the culvert, or climbing up and over the culvert. Consider this dangerous in winter, and slippery when wet. If you think these directions through, you won't waste time and effort on the wrong side! Yay!
Take a moment while you are here to appreciate the view of the covered wooden bridge (the title is "wooden bridge" in German!), one of Frankenmuth's many famous attractions. It was completed in 1979, but the structure is constructed using traditional covered-bridge timber framing techniques. The floor joists and three-span Town lattice truss system of the 239' bridge are made of 15,960 board feet of four inch planks. The portion receiving the greatest wear is of oak while the remaining portion is spruce. 20,000 board feet of Douglas Fir make up the rafters and the roof is shingled with cedar. An additional 4,340 board feet of pine was required for the bridge side boards. In addition to two lanes for automobile traffic, the bridge also has two pedestrian walkways (Wikipedia).
The park area you are in rests between the Cass River and the Bavarian Inn Lodge. This is a favored area for viewing the fireworks on the 4th of July, enjoying a break from the tourist attractions, or just relaxing and taking in the scenery.
