Geocache Description:

A sequence of 5 caches intended to appeal to families, children and school groups who want to begin to explore Kenfig Nature Reserve. There are wonderful displays of wildflowers in the dunes and wetlands which support over 500 species. Please tread carefully & don’t pick them! The walk starts and ends near the car parks.

This is the second cache. It's by the side of the sandy path, a few metres away from a junction. The cache is small-sized and inside a camo bag. Stealth may be needed.

Most of the fruit trees on the nature reserve are native crab apples. The bark is grey brown with a flecking pattern. The trees can become quite gnarled and twisted, especially when exposed to Kenfig's strong winds and the twigs often develop spines. This 'crabbed' appearance may have influenced its common name, 'crab apple'. They are great for wildlife with a long flowering period providing excellent food for bees. The nutritious leaves support lots of caterpillars and the apples are eaten by thrushes and small mammals. The small apples are not so nice for humans to eat raw but are very good for making jam.
