BASTION BELVEDER
SLOVENSKI OPIS
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
The Belveder Bastion A bastion (or baluard) is the term for large platforms built into walls between the 15th and 19th century for the purpose of resisting the brute force of incoming artillery shells and providing a space for the defence artillery. The Belveder Bastion, designed in 1554 by the Venetian architect Alvise Brugnoli, is the only surviving bastion on the outer Koper walls. It was originally located by the sea and reached closer to the town; it is believed that there was a raised arched floor inside with holes for artillery. The appearance of the bastion changed in the 19th century, when a strip of coastal land was added and the south part of the fortification was demolished. After losing its defensive role, the bastion passed into the hands of the French company J. Champion & Cie. Vins de Champagne, which added three cellar rooms used for storing champagne. At the same time, new structures were built along the east and north wall of the bastion; they were later converted into warehouses used for cargo coming through the Port of Koper. In 2005, the port warehouses were moved farther from the town centre, revealing the old bastion, which was fully restored in 2010. The platform once used for booming cannons is now a popular meeting spot. It offers beautiful views of the Bay of Koper and the longest surviving section of the Koper walls stretching out from the bastion to the east.
