The Big Hill Shelter is one of the oldest stone shelters in Harriman Park. It was built in 1927. The shelter is at the intersection of two of the longest trails in the park, the Long Path and the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail.
The yellow blazed Suffern -Bear Mountain Trail was one of the first trails constructed in the park. It travels as, its name suggests, from Suffern to Bear Mountain for over 23 miles. The Long Path is marked with turquoise blazes and is over 25 miles long in Harriman Park. It begins in New York City and extends for over 345 miles to John Boyd Thacher Park west of Albany.
The closest parking is on County Route 106. From there take the yellow blazed SBM trail to the shelter. It is just over 2 miles to the shelter. You could also park on Call Hollow Road and take the turquoize blazed Long Path. the distance is just about the same. I would not recommend parking at either of these locations overnight as there has been many acts of vandalism. The local tow truck drivers have nicknamed them the guardians of the towers.
