HGT16 - My Old Hangouts Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

Warning:  The GPS signals in downtown Hanover jump around like crazy.

It amazing how times change.  It seems like nothing is the same as it used to be.  This cache will take you to the places I hung out when I grew up in this neighborhood.  None of the locations are the same as they were way back when.  This is a 5 stage walking multi-cache.

Stage 1:  This was the sight of my favorite 5 and 10 department store.  This is where I would buy records, goldfish and, most importantly, die cast toy cars.  Now it is a shoe store.  Near this location is the statue commemorating the Battle of Hanover.

ABC = The year of the battle - 900

DEF = The year the statue was erected - 1815

You will find stage 2 at:     N 39 47.ABC   W 76 59.DEF

Stage 2

At this sight there was a large parking lot where we would play wiffle ball using the parking blocks as bases.  One of my best friends Kurt lived across the street in the white house with the green trim.  Kurt is now a Brigadier General in the US Army.

GHI = the address of the building at this sight – 86

JKL = Kurt’s address + 103

You will find stage 3 at:    N 39 48.GHI   W 76 59.JKL

Stage 3

This was the sight of the local butcher shop that I could run to from my house in 28 seconds.  Trust me I timed it plenty of times.  My mom would come here daily to buy meat for dinner and I would buy my baseball cards and get 15 cent sodas out of the soda machine.  You can still buy meat here but not from the same animal.

MNO = The phone number area code +174

PQR = The last 4 digits of the phone number - 1702

You will find stage 4 at:     N 39 47.MNO   W 76 59.PQR

Stage 4

This was my elementary school.  It was also the Junior High for my dad and the High School for my grandmother.  Now it is an apartment building.

STU = The date of construction - 974

VWX = The date of construction - 1869

You will find the final stage at:     N 39 47.STU   W 76 59.VWX

Stage 5

This was a penny candy store that was a regular stop on the way home from school.  Now that you have completed your task you can reward yourself with a more grown-up treat.

This is a multi-cache, however, it is also part of the 2016 Hanover Geo Trail (HGT16), a project designed in cooperation with Main Street Hanover and the Hanover Chamber of Commerce to promote places of interest in the Hanover Area.

This cache contains a unique code which you write down in your Hanover Geo Trail Passport to verify that you found it.
