Sailing has been a sport in the Summer Olympics since 1896 although it was not competed in that Olympiad due to severe weather conditions. Over time, different classes of boats featured at the Games. Initially, the classes were specified in tons, then later in meters, feet or generic names. For 2016 the main classes are Finn, 49er, and 470.
Great Britain and the United States have been the most successful sailing nations while Canada has picked up six medals in the Summer Olympics although no gold.
