Geocache Description:

A short walk up the highest point in Benbecula - rewarded with fantastic views despite the modest height gain.

Prior to April 2016 there was only one geocache located on Benbecula.  Given the size of the island I thought there should be at least one more, hence the placing of this cache.

Rueval is just over 400ft high, yet the summit is the highest point on Benbecula.  However, the views from the top are impressive and on a good day not only can you see Lewis, Harris, the Uists and Barra, but also St. Kilda to the west and Skye, Mull, Rum and Muck (just!) to the east.  Several mainland peaks are also visible, including Ben Hiant, Cul Mor, Ben More Coigach, Rois-Bheinn and Beinn Resipol.  There is well-made vehicle track to the bottom of the hill, and an easy to follow path for most of the ascent.

Depending on how fit you are you could easily get from the car parking space to the cache and back in under an hour, but you may want to take it easier and enjoy the surroundings.  The day I went to place the cache I was treated to birdsong for a large part of the journey and also spotted a small bird of prey (Rueval is part of the Outer Hebrides Bird of Prey Trail).
