Geocache Description:

This is the last cache of my HPG (Hathersage Park and Grab) series, a series of caches hidden at places around the interesting village of Hathersage, where Little John is said to be buried. All the caches can be done as Park and Grabs, or are no more than 2 minutes away from the road. Please replace all caches as found and be respectful when parking and do not block access to any of the residents properties/land.

TheĀ A6187Ā is a secondary route in theĀ Peak District,Ā DerbyshireĀ andĀ South Yorkshire,Ā United Kingdom. It starts inĀ Castleton, runs in an easterly direction past Foxhouse Inn where it joins theĀ A625 road. It is 13.6 miles long.

Route

Foxhouse–Hathersage 3.7 miles

The route starts atĀ Hathersage RoadĀ where the North-most end of Stony Ridge Road joins it on the outskirts ofĀ Sheffield, close to Fox House Inn. This was once the location of Stony Ridge Toll Bar, the location being marked with a commemoration stone. At Fox House a separate branch, also designated the A6187 turns off towards Froggatt Edge where it joins the South-most end of Stony Ridge Road. Beyond Foxhouse the route leading to Hathersage is joined by the B6521 road to Grindleford viaĀ Padley Gorge. The A6187 crosses theĀ Burbage Brook, then passes a rock known as Toad's Mouth where it crosses intoĀ Derbyshire. The road continues towards Hathersage passing between Owler Tor and Over Owler Tor and then takes a tight curve at Surprise View where the traveller will be greeted with a view ofĀ Hope Valley. At this point, where it descends towards the valley bottom it is calledĀ Sheffield Road.

Hathersage–Hope 4.0 miles

The route continues on a straight route with a cycle lane for a while then it come to a major junction with the A6013 atĀ BamfordĀ continuing toĀ Hope.

Hope–Castleton 1.3 miles

The route continues toĀ CastletonĀ over the course of 1 mile. It ends at the foot ofĀ Winnats Pass.

History

Historically the road was designated the A625 but was re-designated after frequent landslips where the road ascendedĀ Mam Tor, resulting in its closure. The A625 was re-routed towards Calver via Stony Ridge andĀ Froggatt Edge.

The cache is a micro, BYOP. There is parking available a few metres from GZ at the parking waypoint. There is a path that runs alongside the Derwent and through the woods to Grindleford Station, you can then have lunch at the station cafe before catching the train back to Hathersage, or if you cross over the line via the footpath crossing you can walk up the hill to a pub for lunch, before dropping down by kettle house through the woods to Grindleford station, and then catch the train back to Hathersage, the perfect walk!

Please replace cache securely and as found, stealth required as it is a popular area for muggles, and be careful when walking near the road.

THIS IS THE END OF THE SERIES

A lot of effort goes into buying/making, placing and submitting caches, so please try to put more than just TFTC, nice quick find, Found or just a smiley face when you log our caches, thanks.
