The Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead branch line ran under this bridge back in the days of steam but sadly there are no rails here nowadays. However, Heathfield station is not far away and opened on 1/7/1874 as Chudleigh Road, becoming Heathfield in 1882. It closed in 1967, another victim of railway closures during this time. Carriage of fuel oil, ball clay and bananas continued here until 1975 after which the only notable visitors were the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1983 staying the night near Teigngrace.
An action group has been set up to get the line to Newton Abbot reinstated as a passenger carrying one now that the log trains have ceased. For more info, go to: http://www.heathraillink.co.uk/about/
