Geocache Description:

PLEASE NOTE THAT GROUSE SHOOTING CAN TAKE PLACE IN THIS AREA BETWEEN 12 AUGUST AND 10 DECEMBER. USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT REGARDING SAFETY IF A SHOOT IS TAKING PLACE WHEN YOU VISIT AND OBSERVE ANY SAFETY SIGNS.

From the provided parking, walk up the track to the pillar.

A Whitley bomber from 19 OTU was operating out of RAF Kinloss on a training flight. On board, were a crew of seven, including an instructor. This was one more crew member than normal for this type of aircraft. However, this should not have presented any problems as the aircraft would not have been loaded with its full complement of bombs.
During the training mission, however, the aircraft crashed into the snow covered hills not far from the summit of Carn a Chóire Mhoir. The Whitley caught fire on impact with the ground.Of the seven crew on board, four were killed and three survived. Situated close to the scene of the accident, there is a monument which commemorates the names of those airmen who lost their lives in this tragic accident. A small pieces of wreckage remain scattered around the area. In 2003, recovered wreckage, including wing, centre section, and fragments of nose was transported by road to Midland Aircraft Recovery Group Projects.

About Ye Ole Survey Monuments

Ye Ole Survey Monument (YOSM) is a captivating series of caches that pays homage to the remarkable legacy of OutForTheHunt's YSM series (GC45CC).

YOSM caches are strategically positioned at or near Trig Points. These triangulation stations have played a pivotal role as surveying landmarks, contributing to the mapping of expansive territories.

Some of these points, bearing historical significance, might now be situated on private land or have vanished with time. As a result, the caches are artfully placed in close proximity, reverently acknowledging the historical importance of these survey monuments.

More information, bookmarks and statistics can be found at the YOSM Website

If anybody would like to expand the Ye Ole Survey Monuments Series, please do.
I would ask that you request a number for your cache first at www.yosm.org.uk
so we can keep track of the numbers and names to avoid duplication.
