Geocache Description:

American wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens). Wintergreens in the genus Gaultheria contain an aromatic compound, methyl salicylate, and are used as a mintlike flavoring.

" />

Wintergreen berries, from Gaultheria procumbens, are used medicinally. Native Americans brewed a tea from the leaves to alleviate rheumatic symptoms, headache, fever, sore throat, and various aches and pains. These therapeutic effects likely arose because the primary metabolite of methyl salicylate is salicylic acid, a proven NSAID that is also the metabolite of acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin. During the American Revolution, wintergreen leaves were used as a substitute for tea, which was scarce.[1]

"

Wintergreen is a common flavoring in American products ranging from chewing gum, mints, and candies to smokeless tobacco such as dipping tobacco (American "dip" snuff) and snus. It is also a common flavoring for dental hygiene products such as mouthwash and toothpaste.

The cache is a "small" camoed pill bottle with a SNAP kind cap. An arrow points to the protrusion to push it open. Please make sure it's snapped back closed, all around, when you're done. The neck is narrow. To make it possible to retrieve the little plastic bag with the rubber band held rolled log, I stuffed some plastic in the bottom of the bottle. This way I hope the log will be reachable from the top and not get below the neck. It's tied in. BYOP. Please keep track of the parts and return as found. It helps to put the little rubber band around your finger while you sign the log. That way it won't get lost.
