Sharp-tailed Grouse -- Tympanuchus phasianellus
This cache is placed in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival, May 19-21, 2016, an annual event held at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, Ashland, Wisconsin.
This cache honors the Sharp Tailed Grouse. The Sharp-tailed Grouse is typical of regions that have open grassland mixed with groves of trees or shrubs. Closely related to the prairie-chickens, it is found mostly farther north. On winter nights it may roost by burrowing into snowdrifts, where the snow helps insulate it from the cold. This is a signature bird of the area’s Moquah Barrens just West of Ashland and North of Hwy 2 at Ino .
No major migration, but birds may move several miles with the season to reach optimum habitat for summer or winter.
Songs and Calls: During courtship, a low single or double cooing note.
The logbook must be signed, otherwise there is no proof of your success. Bring Your Own Pencil.
