Geocache Description:

Great Horned Owl – Bubo virginianus

This cache is placed in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the Chequamegon Bay Birding and Nature Festival, May 19-21, 2016, an annual event held at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, Ashland, Wisconsin.

This cache honors the Great Horned Owl. Found almost throughout North America and much of South America is this big owl. Aggressive and powerful in its hunting (sometimes known by nicknames such as "tiger owl"), it takes prey as varied as rabbits, hawks, snakes, and even skunks (the Great Horned Owl cannot smell them!), and will even attack porcupines, often with fatal results for both prey and predator. Great Horned Owls begin nesting very early in the north, and their deep hoots may be heard rolling across the forest on mid-winter nights.

No regular migration, but individuals may wander long distances in fall and winter, some of them moving southward.

Songs and Calls: Series of low, sonorous, far-carrying hoots, hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo, hoo, with second and third notes shorter than the others.

The logbook must be signed, otherwise there is no proof of your success. Bring Your Own Pencil.
