Long planned, much revised, lengthily debated, sometimes derided, intermittently decried, often lauded, now much loved and also generally blamed for everything from potholes, bad weather and no one answering the phone when you want to have a whinge to council: one failing the Glasshouse cannot be accused of is being unable to stimulate an opinion. If you are not a local, you'll wonder what all the fuss is about. Imagine the Sydney Opera House writ small. In every aspect.
One of the many hurdles this project faced was the discovery of convict era ruins on the site, right where they wanted to dig. What to do? Well, spend a fair bit more to preserve them to start with, but also make them accessible for everyone to see. Check them out at GZ and inside (near the toilets, of course), they're worth a look. And once you're inside, have a bit more of a look, check out the gallery and foyer spaces, and then form/comfirm your own iron clad and never to be swayed opinion on this cultural landmark.
This little cache was obviously placed by one of those philistines who is still not quite reconciled to the existence of the Glasshouse...
