Geocache Description:

The Portuguese Bridge in Debre Libanos takes you over a tributary to the Blue Nile and offers magnificent views into the 'Wusha Gadel' (Dog Valley).

The Portuguese Bridge near Debre Libanos

There is controversy about the origins of the so-called Portuguese Bridge. According to some, it was built in the 16th century by Portuguese; others say that it was built by Ras Darge Sahle Selassie, uncle to Emperor Menelik II,
in the 19th century. Thus, it is also known as Ras Darge's Bridge.

In its appearance and its method of building it is similar to other bridges far to the north, in Gojam and in the Gondar region and constructed in the 17th century either by Indian or Portuguese masons. It is quite possible that the bridge built under Ras Darge's rule as governor was actually a restoration of an already existing bridge.

Whatever the origin, the views in the area are fantastic -
You will not be the only one enjoying them: there is a group of Gelada baboons living in the cliff caves.

After crossing the bridge, continue the path to get the best view on the 600m waterfall. The best time to see this is in the Ethiopian rainy season (July-September). In the dry period leading up to June, though, it might only be a trickle. Continue further for the views into the valley - and the cache.

There is a fee of 22 ETB (2016) to get to the bridge, to be paid just before you get there.
You'll meet voluntary 'guides' who will accompany you - try to get away or have them turn back before you start searching for the cache.
