The most popular of all the dairy cow breeds, Holsteins are black and white (and sometimes red). Their markings are like human fingerprints: no Holsteins have the same markings. Among the largest of dairy cows, weighing 1,500 pounds when grown, Holsteins produce milk high in protein, with a large butterfat content. A Holstein from Wisconsin holds the world record for milk production, according to the Holstein Association U.S.A. Holsteins are the most common dairy cow because they tend to produce more milk than all the other breeds. Look across the street for a living example.
The idea of this series is a community project honoring the Bos among us.
As you drive the road, please feel free to place your own tribute cache to that great animal- the cow.
