Jerome's parents were Solomon and Jenny Horwitz.
Solomon Gorovitz was born in Kovno, Lithuania, on November 4, 1872. The shy young man was sent to a rabbinical seminary a hundred miles from his home. It was there that he met his second cousin Jennie Gorovitz. Born on April 4, 1869, she was three years older than Solomon.
Solomon's life changed when the word came out that there would be forced conscription into the Russian army. Jewish boys faced very lengthy terms in the army, so his parents devised a ruse to fake his identity and get him on a ship to America. But because Solomon was extremely shy and insecure, it was decided that Jenny would accompany him. She was a strong, outspoken woman. After convincing Jenny that the best thing to do would be to marry Solomon, they departed for America immediately after the ceremony. With a dowry from Jennie's parents, they began their fourteen day trip in ship's steerage to America.
Upon their arrival in New York in 1890, as was typical back then, their thick Lithuanian accent changed their last name to Horwitz. (Four of their five sons would eventually change that to Howard). As quoted from "Curly: An Illustrated biography of the Superstooge", By Joan Howard Maurer, Moe Howard's daughter, Jennie and Sol, two strangers in a strange land, were unaware that they would one day change the course of comedic history.
Their first son, Irving, was born in 1891, and grew up to be an insurance salesman.
Their second son, Jack was born in 1893. Jennie's dream was to have a professional in the family, but Jack followed in his brother's footsteps and became an insurance salesman.
The third son, Samuel "Shemp" Horwitz, was born in 1895. He would be the first of the sons to be a professional.
On June 19, 1897, their fourth son, Moses Horwitz was born. Of course, he would become an actor and comedian himself.
It was during this time that Jennie became a "woman of means", making it big in the real estate market.
Thinking that the odds were with them in getting a baby girl this time, on October 22, 1903, the last of the Horwitz brothers was born. Jerome Lester Horwitz was delivered by a doctor who was a brother of Moe's school teacher. It was fine with all of the fans of the Three Stooges years later that Curly was not a girl.
