Enjoy the area and watch for muggles! Dr. Julius Frederick Clarenbach received his medical degree from the Barnes Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1902. He also held a degree in dentistry. He settled in Sundance in 1902 and immediately started his practice that would serve the people of Sundance. Dr. Clarenbach died at the age of 80 in 1958 after practicing medicine in Sundance for 50 years. The good doctor made all of his early house calls with a team and buggy or sled, which he rented from the livery. Later he drove a Model A and sometimes hired a driver for longer trips. His first office was a room in the back of the Sundance Hotel, where the post office now stands and he rented his team and buggy from the livery directly across the street where Sundance State Bank is. He later had his office across the street from Clyde Roberts’ hardware store. The store owners and clerks all acted as involuntary receptionists for several years. They would kindly tell the patients when the Dr. was expected to return from a house call. You never made an appointment to see Dr. Clarenbach, you went to his office and waited. If he was on a house call, sometimes you would have to come back the next day. Many people in Sundance sported dentures from Dr. Clarenbach. He would pull the teeth, take impressions, send them off to a dental lab, and on their return, he notified his toothless patient and they came to his office to get their new dentures fitted. Dr. Clarenbach was a most important part of Sundance History. He performed operations on kitchen tables, delivered babies all over the county to people that paid him in potatos, chickens and livestock because they had no money. This park is named after that wonderful physician that gave so much to so many here in Sundance, WY. Several of Dr. Clarenbach's tools of the trade can be seen at the Sundance Museum.
