Every year in mid-October, the twisty single-track roads of Mull are closed to traffic. The peace and quiet is shattered by 150 rally cars scrambling, sliding and yomping their way around the island.
This has been been happening every year since 1969. This year's (2016) event will be the 47th staging of the Mull Rally.
The "Tour of Mull" Rally, as it was originally known, was the brainchild of the late Brian Molyneux of the 2300 Club of Blackburn. The Club was originally the Mullard Motor Cycle and Car Club, but this rather long title was shortened by interpreting the initial letters as Roman Numerals - MMCCC.
Sadly Brian passed away in 1996. A cairn was erected in his memory on a knoll above the Dervaig hairpin, overlooking the village itself and the islands of Coll and Tiree beyond. Pause here a while, and imagine the sight and sounds of rally cars negotiating the steep climb below you. Or come back in October and experience it for real!
