Geocache Description:

A Norman Church on the present site is first mentioned in 1106, but only the North and South doors and font remain, reused in the subsequent construction.

The church dates back to the 12th century and is generally described as being of Perpendicular style. The main period of construction was in the 15th century, but it has earlier features such as the Norman south doorway and earlier century Decorated Gothic work in the chancel. In the 16th century the church and castle were linked by a raised, covered walkway.

The tower dates to the mid-16th century and houses bells that were restored in 1996. Reordering of the church in 1848 removed the ancient box pews, raised the chancel roof and added a clerestory(a series of high level windows) to the nave.

There are elaborate table tombs in the churchyard, while touching and interesting memorials inside the church commemorate many prominent local families. One of the impressive stained glass windows is dedicated to Lt. Hector Maclaine, Royal Horse Artillery, a prisoner of war murdered by the enemy in 1880 during the 2nd Anglo-Afghan war.

The Church has three separate War memorials :

1) The stone cross on the right side of the main gate is dedicated to those who died in the First World War, There are no names on this memorial.

2) A board in the Church porch listing the names of those who died in the First World War.

3) A wooden memorial inside the church listing those who died in 1914-1919 and in 1939-1945.
