Guglielmo Marconi, físico italiano, nasceu em Bolonha em 1874. Inventor da telegrafia sem fio, obteve a patente de seu invento na Inglaterra. Em 1899 usou a telegrafia sem fio para fazer a comunicação entre as costas francesa e inglesa, no Canal da Mancha. Marconi aperfeiçoou seu aparelho criando, em 1898, os primeiros rádiotelégrafos. Em 1902 foi transmitida a primeira mensagem radiotelegráfica do Canadá para a Inglaterra. Em 1910 foi feita a primeira comunicação entre a Europa e a América do Sul, por telégrafo sem fio. Em 1909 recebeu, juntamente com Carlos Fernando Braun, o Prêmio Nobel de Física. Em 1916, construiu os primeiros aparelhos de ondas curtas, melhorando o sistema de transmissão a longas distâncias. Em 1924, pela radiofonia, a voz humana foi transmitida da Inglaterra para a Austrália. Recebeu, por seus inventos, diversas honrarias, entre elas, em 1922, o título de marquês. Faleceu em Roma no ano de 1937.
A Rua Marconi foi aberta entre finais de 1936 e início de 1937 pelos herdeiros do médico Walter Seng em terrenos de sua propriedade. O leito da rua foi doado à Prefeitura (o que a tornava pública) conforme escritura lavrada aos 14 de maio de 1937, nas notas do 11º Tabelião de São Paulo. Através do Ato nº 1.335 de 12 de Janeiro de 1938, o então Prefeito Fábio Prado aceitava e declarava entregue este logradouro ao trânsito público, e o denominava oficialmente como "Rua Marconi". Na época de sua abertura, os herdeiros sugeriram que a rua recebesse o nome de "Walter Seng". entretanto, o Prefeito optou pelo nome de Marconi porque já existia desde 1932 uma rua na Bela Vista homenageando Walter Seng: a "Rua Dr. Seng". Em 07 de maio de 1974, a Prefeitura de São Paulo transformou esta rua em área de passagem exclusiva de pedestres. A iniciativa integrou uma série de medidas adotadas com o intuito de interditar progressivamente o trânsito no centro, entre as Praças da República e Ramos de Azevedo que, depois, foram transformadas em "calçadões".Nome oficializado pelos Atos nº 1.335, de 12/01/1938 e nº 1.470 de 1938. Consta na lista de denominações oficiais do Decreto nº 15.635 de 1979.

The Marconi Street was opened between late 1936 and early 1937 by the heirs of the physician Walter Seng on land of their property.
