Geocache Description:

[EN] Avrig (German: Freck, Hungarian: Felek) is a town in the Sibiu County. The first documents attesting its existence to 1346.
In the 13th century the Transylvanian Saxons, German-rooted colonists built a church to strengthen their position in Avrig. This is the oldest architectural monument in the town and one of the oldest in the county. Originally built as a Romanesque basilica with a western tower, choir and apse center, between 1260-1290, the church was subsequently amended. In the 16th century the collaterals of the church were removed and it was rebuilt as a hall church. In its current form it still retains from the old building the bell tower, the west central nave and the choir. The fortification walls were built in the 15th century.
Noteworthy is the valuable portal, built in Romanesque style and adorned with medieval sculptures. Very interesting are the figurative sculptures that decorate the portal, that illustrate the struggle of god against evil. Their style is also found in the portal of the reformed church of the neighbouring village of Sacadate and can be attributed to the same master. The altar is baroque and was created in its present form in 1825. In the western tower a clock was installed in 1770 donated by governor Samuel von Brukenthal. Among the church bells kept the oldest one dates from 1777.

Gh.

A toronyórát 1770-ben Samuel Brukenthal ajándékozta a templomnak.
