We hope that you enjoy this series, and are able to discover many of the places
that make the area unique and special.

Amos Ives Root (1839-1923) was an important man in the history of Medina County.

He grew up on a farm outside of Medina and opened a watch repair shop on Public Square
in Medina in the 1860's. One day, a swarm of bees clustered on the store's window.
An employee who was a beekeeper gathered the bees into a hive so that Mr. Root could study it.
That was the beginning of his fascination with bees.

Although beekeeping began as a hobby, it soon became much more than that.
Amos developed a method to harvest honey without destroying the hive.
He became a nationally- and internationally-known expert on bees and is sometimes referred to as
"The Father of Modern Day Beekeeping."

In 1869 when he was 30 years of age, Mr. Root founded a company
that specialized in honey, beehives, and beekeeping supplies and equipment. .
He became a very successful and wealthy businessman.
At the peak of its business, the company was shipping four railroad freight cars
of beekeeping equipment a day.

Over the years, the business climate changed,
and the company changed its focus to the manufacture of a byproduct of bees.
That company is still in existence today and is operated by the descendants of Amos I. Root.

The company's influence in the city of Medina is evidenced in the high school's mascot, The Bees.

This geocache is placed at the former homestead of Amos Ives Root.
