1948 m. gegužės 22 d. 4 valandą ryto įvykdytas didžiausias masinis Lietuvos gyventojų trėmimas, kurio metu panaudojus gyvulinius vagonus ištremta apie 40 tūkst. žmonių, jų tarpe – 10 897 vaikai iki 15 metų. Vykdant centrinio bolševikų aparato Maskvoje direktyvas, tremtiniai nugabenti į Sibirą, SSRS pietus ir kitas menkai tinkamas išgyvenimui vietoves. Tarp įvairių sovietinio režimo represijų prieš Lietuvos gyventojus šie trėmimai užima svarbiausią vietą.

Iš Lietuvos į Sibirą ištremti žmonės 1956 m. pradėjo grįžti į savo tėvynę. Iš pradžių buvo leista grįžti maždaug 17 tūkst. tremtinių, o iki1970 m. į Lietuvą grįžo apie 80 tūkst. žmonių.
