We hope that you enjoy this series, and are able to discover many of the places
that make the area unique and special.

Bees, beekeeping, and honey have long been important in
the history and economy of Medina and Medina County.
It's not surprising then, that mead (sometimes referred to as "honey wine") is produced here.

It is quite possible that mead was one of the first alcoholic beverages ever consumed.
Its discovery was most likely by chance--
Early foragers may have consumed the contents of a rainwater-flooded beehive that had
fermented naturally with the help of airborne yeast.

Ancient Chinese pottery vessels dating from 7000 B.C. suggest evidence of mead fermentation.
The sweet beverage was enjoyed by Vikings, Mayans, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans alike. Its popularity waned over the years, but the ancient beverage has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity.

Mead is produced from three basic ingredients, honey, yeast, and water.
The type of honey used determines the dominant flavor of the mead,
and will vary according to a honey bee’s particular diet of nectar and pollen.
Mild honeys such as orange blossom, clover or wildflower, will produce a traditional light flavored mead,
while blackberry and buckwheat honeys produce bolder, spicier-tasting meads.
