삼부연폭포는 명성산(870m) 중턱의 화강암 지대에 위치한 높이 20m의 3단 폭포로 1억 7천만 년 전 중생대 쥐라기에 관입한 화강암이 지표에 드러난 이후 흐르는 물에 의해 침식되어 생성되었다. 폭포는 흑운모와 백운모가 포함된 복운모화강암으로 이루어져 있다. 백운모의 함유량은 매우 변화가 심하여 함량이 낮은 노두에서는 흑운모화강암과 유사한 암상을 보인다. 화강암에 주로 들어 있는 광물은 석영, 칼륨장석, 사장석, 흑운모, 이다. 이중 칼륨장석은 화강암이 핑크빛 색상을 띠게 하는데, 이곳 암석들 가운데는 핑크빛을 띠고 있는 것들이 많다.
Sambuyeon Falls are located in the granites zone of the Myeongseong mountain(870 m). The falls have a total drop of 20 meters with three levels of water drops. Granite which had penetrated into basement rock in the Jurassic period of Mesozoic Age(170 million years ago) was exposed above the surface and eroded by water and finally formed these beautiful falls. The falls are consisted of two-mica granite where muscovite and biotite are mixed. Content of muscovite varies a lot. In the outcrop where content of muscovite is low, the lithofacies is very similar to biotite granite. Normally granite rocks mainly consist of potassium feldspar, plagioclase, quartz, mica and amphibole minerals. In some rocks around the falls you can easily find the rocks with pink color. It is the potassium feldspar that gives many granites a distinctive pink color.
삼부연이라는 이름은 폭포가 떨어지는 부분에 가마솥처럼 움푹 패인 구멍이 세 개 있어 가마솥 ‘부(釜)’자를 써서 삼부연 폭포라고 한다. 이런 구멍은 오랜 세월동안 떨어지는 폭포 물이 자갈을 회전시켜 암반을 갈아냄으로써 생성된 것이다. 폭포가 떨어지는 암벽에는 현재 물길 외에 물이 떨어졌던 흔적 2개를 볼 수 있는데 이는 원래 물이 흐르던 물길이다. 물줄기가 오랜 세월동안 아래로 떨어지면서 바위를 침식하게 되고 결국은 위쪽 바위가 부서지게 되면서 물길이 후퇴하거나 인근으로 옮겨지게 된다. 이런 현상은 앞부분이 침식된다고 해서 ‘두부침식(Headward erosion, 頭部浸蝕)’이라 한다.
삼부연폭포 아래 연못은 용이 승천한 곳이라는 전설이 있다. 궁예가 철원을 도읍으로 정할 때 여기서 도를 닦던 4마리의 이무기 가운데 3마리만 용으로 승천하였고 이때 3개의 구멍이 생겼다고 한다. 이러한 전설이 있어 폭포 상류에 있는 마을 이름이 용화동(龍華洞)이다. 가뭄이 들 때는 용이 되지 못한 이무기가 심술을 부리기 때문이라고 해서 기우제를 지내기도 했다. 조선시대 성리학자이면서 화가이기도 했던 겸재 정선은 용화동에서 은거하던 스승 김창흡을 찾아오곤 했는데 이 때 삼부연폭포를 화폭에 담기도 하였다.
Waterfalls are found in areas with bands of hard and soft rock. The hard rock takes longer to erode than the soft rock (differential erosion) so the river erodes the land at different rates. The river erodes the soft rock by the main processes of erosion including Hydraulic Action and Abrasion.
At first a small notch is created in the bedrock. The notch may only be a few inches of a drop yet it increases the speed of the river falling over the edge. This encourages the river to erode vertically into the soft rock creating a vertical drop.
Over time the waterfall deepens as the soft rock is continuously eroded. At the base of a waterfall a rounded pool is found. This is called a plunge pool. The force of the falling water causes the water to swirl in the pool in a movement called eddying.
As the water falls the hydraulic action may cause water to splash back against the back wall causing further erosion. This causes undercutting of the back wall. Finally the overhang of hard rock is unstable and unsupported due to undercutting. It collapses and the rocks fall into the plunge pool.
Waterfalls continue to erode backwards in a process called headward erosion.
