GEAA2017: This cache has been problematic almost from day one. I have moved it a few times, replaced it several times, but I feel that this general area just doesn't suit a cache.

Seven years is a reasonable run. Thank you to all to have visited, though sometimes in frustration, and apologies to those who have this on their list, but have yet to get here.

Geocache Description:

Grierson Dump Cache takes you to a path overlooking the river and valley. Cache has been moved due to previous access issues. Terrain rating has changed as the path could be challenging in winter.

This cache leads you to a site that became one of Edmonton’s first dumps! Did you know that the river valley took a beating, as many Edmontonions dumped garbage as early as 1894? The Grierson Dump was located on the north bank of the river east of the Hotel MacDonald, roughly where Shaw Conference Centre and Louise McKinney Park are today. Paper, scrap wood and metal, broken glass, grass cuttings, manure, tin cans and old clothes all ended up at the dump. Its location near downtown made it convenient, and the City used it to stabilize the river bank. By 1912 the first of several petitions were circulated by nearby residents objecting to the dump, citing the smell, the impact on property values, and the danger to public health, particularly the children who played in and around the site. Today this park is the front door to the river valley parks system and a gateway to trails throughout the city
