Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Mile Marker 60 (see history below)

These cement markers, at one point where painted a bright yellow, they indicated mile after mile of Fraser Highway, reminding people how far they had come, and warning them how far they had to go. But time and development soon took over, and the cement mile markers were lost - their purpose no longer useful. Those that still stand are now gray in color, their paint faded, some taken over by bush, or sunken into ditches. The markers were originally put in place when the highway was built in 1931. Mile zero was the main post office in Vancouver. The measurements ran east, along Kingsway and eventually crossed the Fraser River extending all the way to Hope.

Since placing this cache I have found several other Mile Markers, a couple of those have since disappeared as had so many before. Although there was/is one in Hope the last marker I was able to find was Mile Marker 70

On Nov 19/07, this mile marker was stolen by a local chap who decided he wanted it for some kind of private collection of old and interesting things, or at least that is why I assume he stole it. Fortunately for the existence of the mile marker and this cache, the folks across the street, who have lived near this mile marker most of their lives, and consider it their own, observed the criminal act. They obtained the name of one of the persons involved and informed an official at the District of Chilliwack. Although the Official had been in contact with the thief, the marker was not being returned. On Jan 9/08 I found out the name of this person and phoned and suggested he had 4 days to return the marker. Well the marker was returned on the 3rd day and is now where it will hopefully remain. This marker would be in the possession of a criminal were it not for the folks in the small white house across the street from the cache, so give a wave, they will be watching you and "Their Mile Marker".

The saga of this cache over the 9 years of it's existence seems to be never ending. I visited with the folks across the street from the cache on Monday, to my great sadness one of the watchers over this cache passed away yesterday, he will be missed by many but I am sure will be watching from above.

As with all caches along any roadway, please park well off the roadway or park in the driveway of those "nice" people across the road.
