Geocache Description:

Tucked away from the main parks and other monuments in Anchorage is the little known Alaska Fallen Firefighter Memorial.  So it is a perfect place to draw geocachers to for a quick smiley and a few minutes of reflection. Plus it has a cool statue! The nearby Fire Department headquarters also has some historic fire engines on display that many people may find interesting too.

Many of the fallen firefighters memorialized are wildfire firefighters. Alaska wildfires get little attention compared to fires in California and other states, but every year about half of all the US acres burned by wildfires are in Alaska. In 2015, for example, Alaska had 5.1 million acres burned out of the 10.1 million acres burned nationally. Many large wildfires in Alaska are not even actively fought as they are too difficult to access.

You are looking for a well-camouflaged micro size cache. It is not on the monument itself out of respect for the memorial. The cache is on an obvious geo-beacon so it can be found quickly without bothering muggles and give you time to view the memorial. But it still might fool you on your first search.

As a bonus, just a fire-hose length away, is the first part of a two-part multi-cache. And it has another cool firefighter related artwork!
