Piazza del Popolo, anticamente conosciuta con il nome di Piazza Umberto I, è oggi come allora la piazza più importante di Montecatini. Situata davanti alla Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, è il punto di incontro delle tre vie principali del centro: corso Roma, viale Verdi e corso Matteotti.
Corso Roma e corso Matteotti facevano parte dell'antica Strada Provinciale Lucchese, per questo Montecatini era luogo di passaggio per molti viaggiatori che per trascorrere la notte potevano soggironare alla "Vivanderia", chiamata poi "Locanda Maggiore". Questo fu il primo albergo che sorse nella città e che ancora oggi svolge la sua attività nello stesso posto in cui venne costruito verso la fine del 1700. L'albergo ha mantenuto il nome storico affiancandolo ad uno nuovo: Grand Hotel Plaza.
Viale Verdi portava invece il nome di "Gran Viale" ed era la strada principale dei bagni termali. Qui la gente passeggiava nelle varie ore della giornata, acquistava all'edicola l'acqua purgativa venduta a bicchieri ed accedeva alle cure termali che la città offriva. Infatti percorrendo questa via si arriva allo stabilimento termale Tettuccio passando anche accanto allo stabilimento Excelsior.
Al posto della Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, costruita tra il 1953 e il 1958, si trovava la Chiesa Demaniale che presentava un avamposto sostenuto da pilastri e colonne di origine ionica ed aveva un maestoso frontone triangolare nel cui frontespizio era posto un orologio. Le rovine della chiesa si trovano ora nel parco della biblioteca comunale della città e in Piazza del Popolo rimane solamente,segnato sulla pavimentazione, il perimetro ed il punto dove poggiavano le antiche colonne.

Piazza del Popolo, formerly known as Piazza Umberto I, is now as then the most important square in Montecatini. Located in front of the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, it is the meeting point of the three main streets of the city center: Corso Roma, Viale Verdi and Corso Matteotti.
Corso Roma and Corso Matteotti were part of the provincial road of Lucca, in fact many traverlers happened to pass through Montecatini and spent the night in the "Vivanderia", later called "Locanda Maggiore". This was the first hotel that was built in the city and it still carries on business in the same place where it was built in the end of 1700. The hotel has retained its historical name merging it with a new one: Grand Hotel Plaza.
Viale Verdi had the name of "Grand Avenue" and was the main road to the thermal baths. Here people walking in the different hours of the day, bought the news-stand purgative water sold in glasses and they accessed to spa treatments that the city offered. In fact along this road you arrive to the Terme Tettuccio also passing by the Excelsior establishment.
In place of the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, built between 1953 and 1958, there was the Chiesa Demaniale which presented an outpost supported by pillars and columns of Ionic origin and had a majestic triangular pediment in whose frontispiece was placed a clock. The ruins of the church are now situated in the park of the municipal library of the city and in Piazza del Popolo you can see, marked on the pavement, the perimeter and the point where the ancient columns rested.
