Dardanelles
The Dardanelles is a narrow strait of water that runs for 61km and links the Black Sea with the Mediterranean. It separates Europe from Asia. The Dardanelles is naturally difficult to navigate and during World War I the Ottoman forces built defences along both sides and laid underwater mines. By capturing the Gallipoli peninsula, the Allies hoped to allow the Navy access through the Dardanelles to capture Constantinople (Istanbul). Source: ae2.org.au
