The beautiful New Forest

The Cache

This is a nice quick-to-find cache located next to a New Forest cattlegrid, these grids are designed to ensure that large forest animals cannot cross the forest borders to the main roads. There is likely to be a bit of traffic at this location and muggles a-plenty so it's sneaky squirrel time.

Considerations

  • This cache is located on the edge of a busy main road. It is safe for children under direct parental supervision but please remember the highway code and be courteous to road users.

  • This is a high muggle traffic area so be discrete.
  • Always bring a pen to sign the log
  • This cache is located right near a forest byway gate, if you're a dog owner you might want to walk your dog as part of the cache find.

The Location

Cadnam is first recorded in the 1270s as Cadenham. The name apparently means the farmstead ("ham") of a man named Cadda. In the 13th century there was an estate at Cadnam and at nearby Winsor which belonged to the nuns of Amesbury, who in 1286 obtained a grant of free warren in both estates. It seems to have formed part of the manor of Wigley, and the rent of tenants at Cadnam was paid to Amesbury Abbey until the Dissolution. Land at Cadnam and Winsor was granted with the manor of Wigley to Edmund Vaughan in 1545. All of these lands subsequently became part of the Paultons estate.
