Stap meer dan 400 jaar terug in de tijd. Of toch niet helemaal. Anno 1600 was dit het domein van de schoenmakers, die de noodklok van de kathedraal moesten luiden. Hier woonden enkel de armste mensen van de stad. Hygiëne was onbestaande. Tegen de jaren '60 dreigde dit steegje te verdwijnen. Gelukkig werd het gered door Axel Vervoort in 1969. Toen hij voor de eerste keer dit stukje geschiedenis zag was het liefde op het eerste gezicht. Hij was er eenentwintig toen hij de steeg opkocht, geld leende bij zijn vader, en aan de restauratiewerken begon. Zo redde hij 16 renaissancepanden van de sloophamer. Nu wandel je hier langs sfeervolle antiekwinkeltjes, kunstgalerijen en restaurants. Dit is ook de uitgelezen plaats om op maandag in de zomer naar de beiaardconcerten te luisteren. // Step over 400 years back in time. Or maybe not. Anno 1600 this was the domain of the shoemakers who had to sound the alarm of the cathedral. The poorest people of the city lived here. Hygiene was nonexistent . By the 1960's the alley was threatened to disappear. Luckily it was saved by Axel Vervoort in 1969. When he saw this piece of history for the first time it was love at first sight . He was twenty-one when he bought the alley, borrowed money from his father and began the restoration work . So he saved 16 Renaissance buildings from demolition . Now you walk along it charming antique shops , art galleries and restaurants. This is also the perfect place to listen to the carillon concerts on Mondays in the summer.
