The Location:
The Cache is placed on the Miners Trail, just a few mins from the Ballinafunshoge ( baile na Fuinnnseoige, the townland of the ash tree) car park. The trail starts at the Mill Brook Stream on the east side of the car park As you walk up the miners trail you are following in the footsteps of the miners who set out for the Ballinfunshoge mine back in the 19th Century. This mine was once the largest and most productive lead mine in the Valley. The Principal mineral being mined was Galena, also called lead sulphide from which lead is extracted. The spoil heaps dotted around the valley are a reminder of the rich mining heritage of Glenmalure. The recommended map for the Rebels Cave Trail is the East West Mapping Lugnaquilla & Glenmalure 1:30,000 as this is best for the forest tracks in the area.
