HAMILTON STREET STABLES On this site between Wilson and Hamilton Streets Thomas Young and his brother George, Stock and Station Agents established a Horse and Cattle Sale Yards in 1875. Thomas Young specialised in Clydesdale heavy horses which were used extensively through out the Wimmera - Mallee in land clearance, the grain industry and the establishment of the Wimmera - Mallee water supply system. Wimmera bred draft horses in particular Clydesdales were in high demand through out Victoria. In 1911 the Horsham Borough Council leased part of Young's yards as a Municipal Sale Yard. After the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 both Young Bros and Hagelthorn & Bolton conducted horse sales at the Horsham Sale Yards for purchase by the Australian Army. The horses required were heavy horses to be used for pulling Artillery Guns, Field Ambulances, Heavy Service Wagons etc. These heavy horses were bred by crossing Clydesdales with thoroughbreds and generally known as "Gunners" as opposed to the Light Horse Mounts the "Walers". 196,000 horses bred in Australia were sent to war only one returned to Australia.
