You are on your way to success along berm of the Enlarged Erie Canal. This section of canal was used to transport cargo, people and ideas from 1845 to 1916. The berm is the opposite wall of the canal from the towpath. This was often carefully monitored for breaks or leaks; however it was not leveled or graded like the towpath. The berm would see traffic from those in the local community as a path. This portion of the Canal through Fort Hunter was walled with stone in hopes to reduce the risk that the berm or towpath would wash out.
