A Área Protegida para a Gestão de Habitats ou Espécies da Ponta do Cintrão, com 25 ha, estende-se desde a parte mais ocidental da falésia do Calhau do Cabo, em Santa Iria, até ao porto de Santa Iria. Esta zona é particularmente importante para a nidificação do cagarro (Calonectris diomedea borealis) e o pintainho (Puffinus assimilis). Nas falésias predominam as zonas de matos macaronésicos endémicos tais como a urze (Erica azorica) e o bracel-da-rocha (Festuca petraea), e uma vegetação vivaz das costas de calhaus rolados.
OS GARAJAUS
Os garajaus (ou andorinhas-do-mar) são uma presença constante durante os meses de Primavera e Verão. Estas aves nidificam em ilhéus e praias remotas, em colónias densas (podendo atingir 2 a 3 ninhos por metro quadrado), numa estratégia de "segurança-pelo-número", comum a muitas aves marinhas. Os machos capturam peixes vistosos para cortejar as fêmeas e ambos os sexos alimentam as crias com peixes obtidos num raio de 20 quilómetros das colónias. No final da época reprodutiva os garajaus fazem migrações, possivelmente superiores a 15.000 Km, até à América do Sul e África do Sul.
Estas aves são muito vulneráveis à presença humana, principalmente durante os períodos de postura e incubação. São territoriais e, quando perturbados, defendem o ninho com agressividade, chegando mesmo a bicar os intrusos. Se a perturbação for muito intensa, podem abandonar o ninho. O período reprodutor decorre entre Abril e Julho. Os ninhos situam-se em locais protegidos por rochas ou vegetação, mas os ovos (normalmente, um ou dois) são depositados directamente no chão.
Nos Açores, a população de garajau-comum está estimada em cerca de 4.000 casais reprodutores. A nível mundial a população é superior a 10.000 casais reprodutores e encontra-se estabilizada.
O garajau-rosado, a espécie mais sensível, nidifica em todas as ilhas dos Açores, embora com efectivos baixos em São Miguel e Corvo. As estimativas populacionais para o garajau-rosado são de cerca de 1.000 casais reprodutores, o que representa 60% da população nidificante na Europa. Nas últimas décadas as populações mundiais de garajau-rosado sofreram um decréscimo acentuado, sendo considerada uma espécie muito ameaçada.

The protected area for Habitat or Species Management Cintrão Ponta, 25 ha, extends from the westernmost part of the Calhau Cape cliff in Santa Iria, to the port of Santa Iria. This area is particularly important for nesting of the Cory's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea borealis) and chick (Puffinus assimilis). The cliffs dominate the areas of endemic Macaronesian bushes such as heather (Erica azorica) and bracel-the-rock (Festuca petraea), and perennial vegetation back of rolled stones.
THE STERNS
The terns (or swallows-fish) are a constant presence during the months of spring and summer. These birds nest on islets and remote beaches in dense colonies (reaching 2 to 3 nests per square meter), a strategy " security-by-number ", common to many seabirds. Males capture flashy fish to woo females and both sexes feed the young fish obtained within 20 kilometers of the colonies. At the end of the breeding season the terns make migrations, possibly more than 15,000 km, to South America and South Africa.
These birds are very vulnerable to human presence, especially during periods of laying and incubation. They are territorial, and when disturbed, they defend the nest aggressively, and even peck at intruders. If the disruption is severe, can leave the nest. The reproductive period is between April and July. The nests are located at sites protected by rocks or vegetation, but the eggs (usually one or two) is deposited directly on the floor.
In the Azores, the population of common-tern is estimated at around 4,000 breeding pairs. The world population is more than 10,000 breeding pairs and is stabilized.
The tern-pink, the most sensitive species, nests on all the islands of the Azores, although with low effective in São Miguel and Corvo. Population estimates for the tern pinkish are about 1,000 breeding pairs, representing 60% of the nesting population in Europe. In recent decades the world population of stern pinkish suffered a sharp decline, and is considered a very endangered species.
