As copper mining companies grew, so did supporting commercial developments. One business that was typical to find was the local blacksmith, or metalworker.

Born in 1863, Amos Bammert started blacksmithing in the Keweenaw near the Cliff Mine in the 1880s. In the early 1900s his shop was moved to its current location. His son Albert joined him in the blacksmith and woodworker trade in 1909 at the age of 13. The blacksmith shop would build sleighs, wagons, buggies, and later operated intermittently, with the last saddle horse shoed here in 1940.

In 1998, Albert’s sons donated the building and its contents to the Keweenaw County Historical Society, a Heritage site of Keweenaw National Historical Park.
