Simply put, a spillway is a channel for diverting excess water in a waterway. Where Burketts Creek enters the Tenn-Tom Waterway, a spillway is utilized to reduce erosion of the banks of the Waterway. This particular type of spillway is known as a "stepped" spillway. This type of spillway has been used in contruction for over 3000 years. The many raised concrete pillars in the chute slow any excess water considerably before it reaches the bottom, lessening erosion potential and turbulence that can affect waterway traffic.
