La Pieve di San Donato sorge su una collina che domina il comune di Calezano. Da qui passava l'antica strada romana che collegava Firenze con Pistoia. Le prime notizie della chiesa si ritrovano tra il IX ed il X secolo. Nel XIV secolo la chiesa offrì riparo agli abitanti del territorio circostante in fuga dalle incursioni ghibelline. Nel 1450 entrò invece a far parte delle proprietà medicee e nel 1460 Carlo, figlio naturale di Cosimo il Vecchio, modificò la struttura dotandola di un elegante chiostro. Trasformata in residenza di villeggiatura, dal 1502 San Donato viene utilizzata dai canonici della propositura di Prato: in questo periodo, tra i suoi pievani illustri si ricordano Giovanni de' Medici (divenuto Papa col nome di Leone X nel 1516) e Alessandro Ottaviano de' Medici (Leone XI, 1605).
La chiesa è oggi molto conosciuta per l'aver ospitato Don Lorenzo Milani. La sua figura è diventata celebre nel tempo grazie al suo riconosciuto impegno civile nell'istruzione dei poveri. Prese a cuore l'insegnamento lavorando per una scuola popolare di operai e si interessò a far sì che anche bambini provenienti dai ceti più poveri potessero ricevere un'istruzione di base.

The Pieve di San Donato is situated on a hill overlooking the town of Calezano. Once there was here the ancient Roman road that connected Florence and Pistoia. The first news of the church are found between the ninth and tenth centuries. In the fourteenth century the church offered shelter to the inhabitants of the surrounding territory fleeing ghibelline raids. In 1460 Carlo De Medici, the natural son of Cosimo il Vecchio, altered the structure endowing it of an elegant cloister. From 1502 San Donato is used by the canons of the rectory of Prato: in this period, among its illustrious people we remember Giovanni de 'Medici (who became Pope Leone X in 1516) and Alessandro Ottaviano de' Medici (Leone XI, 1605).
The church is today widely known for having hosted Don Lorenzo Milani. He has become famous over time thanks to his civic engagement in the education of the poor people. He took to heart the teaching by working for a popular school of workers and he took an interest in ensuring that children from poorer classes could receive a basic education.
