I placed this geocache to bring you to an impressive building that is across the street. I pass by this building frequently and always think that they don't build schools like this any more. The building is Sewanhaka High School and is one of 5 high schools in the Sewanhaka Central High School District. The name Sewanhaka translates to "Island of Shells" in English but I can find no reference as to why it was used as the name of the school.
The school was constructed in 1929 in the Village of Floral Park to serve the then sparsely populated area of Western Nassau County. Additional school rooms were added in 1936. By the late '50's the post WWII baby boom necessitated the 4 school addition to the district (in Floral Park, New Hyde Park, Elmont and Franklin Square).
The following are some notable alumni:
Telly Savalas - Actor "Kojak"
Al Oerter - 4 time Olympic Gold Medalist - in discus throw Vinnie Testaverde - NFL Quarterback, 1986 Heisman Trophy Winner
Also: Don't miss recording the benchmark KU3243 - Sewanhaka High School tower.
The area can be busy at times so watch out for muggles.
