Geocache Description:

Join us for KT61, in the scenic and historic Bugsworth Basin.

For more information about the venue please visit the link. We have our own restaurant area reserved from 6pm onwards. The event will keep to the regular KT formula of of food, drink and geochat and it is my intention for a small number of caches published at 8pm in keeping with tradition, more details to follow. The event will officially end at 10pm although you are welcome to stay longer, as the pub doesn't close till late.

Why the end of the line you ask? Don't panic, the KT events are still going strong. The pub is located at the Bugsworth Basin, a large canal basin at the terminus of the Peak Forest Canal, and it was once a busy interchange with the Peak Forest Tramway which also terminated here, for the transport of limestone and burnt lime. Work on the restoration of the derelict Bugsworth Basin, a Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1977, commenced in 1968. It finally reopened to boats at Easter 1999, and a significant increase in the use of the canal occurred. However, this was the first time that powered boats had used the basin, and the dry-stone walling with clay puddling deteriorated rapidly. Walls collapsed, there were several near breaches, and a breach resulted in the basin closing again in October 1999. In 2005 the basin reopened to boat traffic after a £1.2 million restoration. Work included sealing the bottom of the basin to stop leakage, stonework repair and environmental measures to conserve the site's protected water vole population.

There have been a few KT events by the side of the Peak Forest Canal through the years, or not far away from it. My KT at Coombs took us to the reservoir that feeds the canal, and so it is the next natural step to visit the basin at the end of the canal, hopefully an ideal venue on a summers night. However, as it is my event, I would put in a raincoat, regardless of what it looks like when you leave the house . This venue has known caching events in the past, it was home to a NWCMM in April 2008, when local man M1EYO logged his 5,000th find - at the time, he was the first cacher in the UK to reach that many finds, and a cache nearby quite rightly marks the occasion.

As for the name of the village, Buxworth was originally called Bugsworth, from the Old English Bucga's Worth ("Bucga's Enclosure"), but in the early 20th century some residents began to dislike the name of their village; their cause was championed by the local vicar, Dr J R Towers, and the village school headmaster, Mr W T Prescott. As a result of the efforts of these two residents, Bugsworth officially became Buxworth on 16 April 1930. No regard was paid to the ancient origins of the village name, which can be traced back to Norman times. The basin continues to be called by it's original name. A point of interest for the event venue, it was previously owned by Coronation Street actress Pat Phoenix.

All are welcome at KT events, we are not just a group of regulars and we encourage anyone to join us. The events move around the area and attract different people in each different place. If you've not been to a KT event before, please do log a 'Will Attend' so we can look out for you; please do come and join in the fun.

Access -
By car, there is a large car park.
