Barren Strawberry Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

K.E.T.: Time to give up on these that keep disappearing. After contemplation, I have come to the conclusion that it's not prudent for an octogenarian to get up and out there alone. In COVID times it's the only way I can check on my caches.

Geocache Description:

Barren Strawberries make a nice ground cover along this part of the Blue trail. You'll find the cache halfway between the signs for White Pine and Quaking Aspen.

Barren Strawberry, Waldsteinia fragarioides (syn. Dalibarda fragarioides Michx.), also called Appalachian barren strawberry,[1] or just barren strawberry.

Bright, golden-yellow, 5-petaled flowers bloom early to late spring creating a striking accent against evergreen, trifoliate leaves. Flowers and foliage appear on separate stalks; foliage spreads by rhizomes just below the soil surface.

Found in woods and open areas from New Brunswick to Quebec, west to Minnesota and south to Missouri and Tennessee and east to Georgia. Fruit is small and inedible.

The cache is a big "micro" camoed pill bottle, containing a rolled log with rubber band in a plastic zip lock tiny bag. The bottle is the Push and Turn kind and it's tied in. FLLT Permit: Park Preserve #03.
