The loction:
The cache is placed at the boundary of Ballinafunshoge forest and the open mountain of Cullentragh park. When you pass through the gate you are entering a working hill sheep farm. This area has been farmed by the Nolan family for generations ,please respect their rights and ensure dogs are kept on a lead in this area. Do not enter the sheep pen to the left of the boundary gate, the gate that is straight ahead (slightly to the right) is the exit gate to continue for the rebels cave..Please ensure all gates are left as you find them ,except the boundary gate, that should be closed at all times... all the easy caches are behind you.... its now time for the going to get tough. This location was chosen for a cache to ensure that you approach the Rebels Cave from this location,as lower tracks lead to impenetrable gorse, and climbing up straight from the valley floor is only for the very foolish or the very fit..
Leave no Trace:
The cache is placed in accordance with Coilte Leave no Trace principle...please follow this principle and protect the beauty of Glenmalure, why not bring a plastic bag and practice CITO... observe the country code.
Be Prepared:
The rebels cave trail requires proper footware ,raingear, maps, gps, compass, and a sense of adventure. All photos welcome. The not many people know that fact: the most popular breed of sheep in the Wicklow mountains is the Cheviot ,named after the their place of origin, the Cheviot Hills on the Scottish English border.Their thick fleece of wool helps them survive the harsh winters in the hills.
