Geocache Description:

SRT Fish Hatchery GeoTour

The Cold Lake Fish Hatchery (CLFH) was operational in 1986 and was the fourth fish hatchery that the Provincial Government built. The primary role was to be the provincial walleye hatchery and the secondary role was to rear and stock trout throughout the Province.

The walleye program varied in terms of production over the past 30 years but the hatchery has the capacity to incubate 100 million eggs that can produce and stock 70 million four day old fry and 100,000 5cm and 40,000 12cm walleye fingerlings. The walleye stocking program stocked many reservoirs in southern Alberta to create walleye fisheries where there was none before.

The CLFH has eighty-five early rearing troughs that fish are grown from 2cm to 9cm then fifty-six large raceways that allow the fish to grow from 15-25cm in size before stock out. The typical production of fish each year is around 55,000-65,000 kilograms of fish weight or around 900,000 trout.

The hatchery rears the fish for stock-out in the spring with some lakes stocked in the fall. During the summer we rear next years large 20-25cm trout program so when you are here touring the facility you will see the trout we will stock in the fall and the carry-overs for next spring. There maybe some rainbow trout eggs in the facility if they have a arrived on time.
