Shen Kuo (1031-1095) was a Chinese polymath with accomplishments in medicine, astronomy, biology, engineering, and government as well as geography. He served in the Song Dynasty imperial court, but was ousted from his position after overseeing several critical mistakes during a military campaign against invaders. He invented a magnetic compass that was useful for navigation, and calculated the difference between magnetic north and true north. He developed a theory of erosion and uplift of the land to explain the origin of modern landforms, and proposed that the earth's climate has changed in the past. His most extensive written work is known as the Dream Pool Essays.
