Geocache Description:

This cache is one in an ongoing series highlighting important figures in the history of the academic discipline of geography. If you complete this series, you might be ready to pass your qualifiying exams for a PhD in Geography!

Abū Rayḥān Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad Al-Bīrūnī (973-1048), commonly known simply as Al-Biruni, was a Persian scholar from Khwarezm (now part of Uzbekistan) who is known as the "founder of Indology" (the study of India) and "father of geodesy" (the study of the shape of the Earth). To avoid "walking across hot, dusty deserts," he developed a new and more accurate technique for calculating the size of the Earth based on the angles between points on a mountaintop and the nearby plain. His book Cartography discussed a variety of projections that could be used to create maps of the Earth. He also produced a series of maps of cities in India and the Middle East.

This cache is NOT a park and grab! There is no safe place to stop along East Street. Please park at the St Boniface church and walk up to get this cache.
