Geocache Description:

The Cache:

The cache has a locked log within a tab lock container

Unless you sign the locked log you have not completed the rebel's cave trail.

(The second number on the lock ( the middle number) is between 0 and 9 )

A special prize awaits the first to complete the Rebel Cave trail.

The cache can only be opened by entering the secret numbers that have been accumulated on the Rebels Cave Trail. Unfortunately, unless you unlock the rebels cave log and complete the trail you are not eligible for the first-to-find prize for completing the rebels cave trail.

The location:

This Rebels cave is perched high up on the crags of Cullentragh Park. It is not for the faint-hearted it is very hard to find due to the steep terrain and the fact that its location can only be accessed from one direction. ( East)  It is a tough  5/5 cache that will be a test for all who attempt it. The other problem for the cacher is that the entrance to the cave is not at ground level. Please note the cache is not in the Rebels Cave.

To return to the car park you can retrace your steps or go directly down to the valley below, it is a shorter walk but care should be taken due to the steep terrain... the choice is yours.

The Battle of Glenmalure:

When you left the Gateway to the mountain cache you would have walked across a famous Battlefield  Lodarrig the red plain, the site of the Battle of Glenmalure 25 August 1580. It was here on that day that the English forces led by Sir Arthur Grey de Wilton lost 800 men to the Rebel forces led by Feagh Mc Hugh O'Byrne. The rebel's cave location was a perfect vantage point to observe troop movements in the Valley below and  the Table Track to the west from where Lord Grey's troops are believed to have entered the valley .

Leave no Trace:

The cache is placed following Coilte Leave no Trace principle...please follow this principle and protect the beauty of Glenmalure, why not bring a plastic bag and practice CITO.......OBSERVE THE COUNTRY CODE.

Be Prepared:

The rebel's cave cache involves walking on open Mountain with no tracks, knowledge of map reading,GPS, and compass are required. ensure proper footwear, Raingear, and don't forget your sense of adventure.
