Torsten Hägerstrand (1916-2004) was a Swedish geographer who did important work in cultural geography. He was an important figure in the "quantitative revoltion," pushing for the use of mathematical techniques in geographical research. He emphasized the importance of examining individual behavior in order to understand social phenomena, and of linking human behavior to spatial location. His best-known contribution was the concept of "time-geography," in which the activities of a person are traced through the course of a day or lifetime to show where they traveled and how much time they spent in one location or another. Time-geography is often illustrated with a three-dimensional diagram like the one shown below.
